The Wurlitzer 780 and 780E jukeboxes were produced by the Wurlitzer Company in 1941. They feature a classic furniture look with minimal lighting. They can hold and play up to 24 78-rpm records for 24 song selections. Some people call them a “Wagon wheel” because of the wheel like grill in front of the quilted looking grill screen, but that is in fact intended to be a spinning wheel.
The Wurlitzer 780 and 780E models feature illuminated glass panels behind wood scroll work. They have a visible song selector mechanism that allows users to browse through the available song titles and make their selection. They are equipped with a built-in amplifier and speaker system for audio playback. The “E” model featured a new electric keyboard as opposed to the mechanical one, it also allowed support of a stepper or remote selection.
Designed to be used in public places, the Wurlitzer 780 and 780E jukeboxes feature a coin mechanism that accepts nickels or dimes, allowing users to pay for their song selection. They have a keyboard control panel on the front, allowing users to make their song selections using numbered buttons or keys corresponding to the record selection. The buttons or keys are often designed with a decorative motif, adding the machines overall appeal.
Overall, the Wurlitzer 780 and 780E jukeboxes were quite popular during their time. Designed for a classic look for a more contemporary location. Today they are highly sought after by collectors and jukebox enthusiasts.
