The AMI Model D is a classic Art Deco jukebox that was produced by Automated Musical Instrument Company (AMI) in 1951. It has a curved front plastic dome and squared edges. IT was offered in two models D-40 that played 40 selections of 78’s and D80 that played 80 selections of 45rpm records, it held 40 records.
The D-40 shipped playing 78 rpm records but a popular modification is to convert to 45 rpm records. A 45 adapted machine is easily identifiable by the blue adapter rings and larger turntable capstan on the turntable platter.
The D-80 was the introduction to the new 700 series mechanism for playing 45s. Very similar to its previous mech but instead of moving the records it moved the player.
The Model D features colorful lighting effects that included rotating color cylinders in the lower pilasters. It also had an additional cylinder behind the title strip display.
Designed to be used in public places, the Model D features a coin mechanism that accepts nickels, dimes, and quarters. When a coin is inserted, the user can select songs they would like to play. The Model D can also be equipped with a remote control that allows the operator to select songs from a distance. The Model D also features a title strip holder that displays the name of the song and artist for each selection.
